Bastien Pourtout, born in 1982, holds a Master's degree in Economic and Social History from Paris X (2012) and a Master's degree in Photography and Contemporary Art from Paris VIII (2019). Edouard Taufenbach, born in 1988, holds a Master's degree in Digital Arts and Media from Paris I (2014).
They have been working together since Spéculaire (2018–2019), based on Sébastien Lifshitz's collection of vernacular photographs. The collages they created were exhibited at Galerie Binôme, at Paris Photo the same year, and the following year in Rome, London, Mexico, and New York, at the Athens Photo Festival, and at Villa Noailles. They published a monograph on this project with Éditions l'Artière.
In 2020, they won the Swiss Life Prize for Four Hands for the project Le bleu du ciel, focused on the flight of the swallow. They undertook a residency at Villa Medici to develop this work and decided upon their return to become an artistic duo. This project was exhibited at the Musée de la Piscine in Roubaix, at the Approche photography fair, in various galleries, and in Arles for Les Rencontres de la Photographie. They produced a second publication with Éditions Filigranes.
In 2022, they organized an exhibition with gallerist/collector Pierre Passebon around his collection of Marlene Dietrich photographs; two works from this collection were presented at the Cinémathèque under the curatorship of Matthieu Orléan for the exhibition Cinemode by Jean-Paul Gaultier.
In 2023, they began their collaboration with Galerie C and presented the exhibition Le jardin qui bascule in the Parisian space. This project was followed by a second exhibition this year, Je suis très emballé.e. Both works on gardens will be shown this autumn at Paris Photo.
In 2024, they won the Maison Ruinart Prize and, following a residency in Champagne, presented the project Jardin de Craie at Paris Photo and at TEFAF in Maastricht.
In 2025, they experimented with ceramics during a residency with Louis Lefèbvre to transpose their reflections on gardens into this medium.
Their duo practice is defined as a method of protocols and games. Using various cameras (digital SLR, smartphone, or Rolleiflex), they produce photographs to arrange, associate, and circulate as messages to each other—an entire visual language. Always in the making, the images are not conceived a priori; they are invented and constructed through exchange.
They work with Galerie C in Paris and Neuchâtel, as well as with dealer Pierre Passebon and Almanaque Fotográfica gallery in Mexico. Their work has been featured in numerous press publications such as Le Figaro (December 5, 2024), Le Monde (July 9, 2021), Libération (May 7, 2021), Télérama (February 6, 2021), and The New York Times (November 9, 2018).
